Trying to remain agile in a BIG design world.

It seems that a lot of folks are experiencing the “Error 51: Unable to communicate with the VPN subsystem” issue with Cisco’s VPN Client in Mac OS X. After much searching when I encountered the same issue, the solution turned out to be quite simple.

  1. Download and install the client from MacUpdate.
  2. Profit.

There is no annoying middle step.

I actually blame Cisco on this one. 1) Their VPN client is propietary. 2) Their VPN client is officially only available to Cisco customers. Meaning, if your vendor is the customer, and you are the end-user, tough luck. 3) It took them about 6 months to release a version that worked on Vista. FAIL.

Had to go thru this nonsense when trying to log into our Cisco firewall from Vista. Googling revealed a lot of people asking the same question: why does Cisco suck? And then below that, a broken link to some hacker site offering the client for download.

Thanks. It worked fine on Macbook Air.
